Fly Fish for Trout on the Youghiogheny
Ohiopyle, PA

AVOID CABIN FEVER & COME FISH THE YOUGH!

January to February
Water conditions: It's winter! You could skate on most of the streams in this area, or stay home and keep warm. Those who want to fish thankfully have the Youghiogheny.

The Yough is fishing well and is at ideal levels currently. Noon air temperature today was 22, water temperature ranged from 34-38 degrees. We caught a number of nice rainbows fishing from Confluence down to Ramcat.

Tip of the week...and the next month.
Pattern selection for winter fishing on the Yough is quite simple. You will need a scalpin pattern in brown, black or olive sz 8-10, an egg pattern in pink or white and some midge larva patterns sz 20-22. These flies have worked very well for the last 2 months.

On warmer days be on the lookout for midge hatches. We have had some good dry fly action earlier this month.

Since water conditions change quickly at this time of the year, call the shop for up to the last minute conditions 724-329-5517.

AVOID CABIN FEVER & COME FISH THE YOUGH!

ALSO TRY:
Caddis Larva sz 14-16
Bead Head Prince Nymph sz 16-18
Bead Head Pheasant Tail sz 12-16
Streamers 6-10

Youghiogheny River Hatches courtesy of flyfishingconnection.comThe Youghiogheny River offers a classic big river fishing experience. Our skilled boatmen use oar rigs to maneuver you into those hard to cast places: that hidden hole or around that pesky branch. Their Fly Fishing expertise will guide you through the day, teaching you casting techniques or perfecting your existing skills and sharing their knowledge on local hatches. We offer day long fishing trips on two sections of river:

The Middle Yough This portion of the river starts at the tailrace/outflow of the Yough Lake. This frequently stocked area makes for a superb start to the day. The next nine miles are a breathtaking assortment of mixed riffles, pools, rolling flats and pocket water galore. Cold water releases from Yough Lake Dam create a true trailwater with good trout temperature Fly Fishing on the Youghioghenyyear round, from Confluence to well below Ohiopyle. In summer, when most area streams are too low and warm to be fished, the Yough is still prime with good insect activity and rising lunker trout. With it's classic big river characteristic, jaw dropping scenery, to the clock hatches, and pole bending trout this trip truly is a fisherman's dream come true.

The Lower Youghiogheny mixes both of our true passions, tricky whitewater and trophy size trout. This trip is best described as an anglers adventure. The main attraction of The Lower Yough is that this section of the river is not wadable below the first railroad bridge, so you'll be fishing almost virgin waters. This makes for an abundance of lightning striking natives and wise old trophies, "Bring extra tippet boys you're gonna need it!". As the river continues downstream towards the takeout, the trout start to back off and make room for hard fighting, high jumping, bronze back small mouth bass. This trip is definitely one of a kind - where getting down the river is just as exciting as catching what's in it.
