![]() Fly Fish for Trout on the Youghiogheny Ohiopyle, PA |
Match the Hatch Terrestrials are already important with flying ants and beetles representing the first of the land dwelling insects to end up on the water as trout food. Tip
of the week: It's hard to beat sucker spawn for those recently stocked trout. Now is the time to fish March Brown & Sulpher nymphs as these insects are becoming quite active in preparation for the upcoming hatches. A large green drake nymph will also produce soon since green and brown drakes should start to hatch around the 3rd week of July. Hatches ALSO TRY these nymph patterns:

The
Middle Yough This portion of the river starts at the tailrace/outflow
of the Yough Lake. This frequently stocked area makes for a superb start
to the day. The next nine miles are a breathtaking assortment of mixed
riffles, pools, rolling flats and pocket water galore. Cold water releases
from Yough Lake Dam create a true trailwater with good trout temperature
The
Lower Youghiogheny mixes both of our true passions, tricky whitewater
and trophy size trout. This trip is best described as an anglers adventure.
The main attraction of The Lower Yough is that this section of the river
is not wadable below the first railroad bridge, so you'll be fishing almost
virgin waters. This makes for an abundance of lightning striking natives
and wise old trophies, "Bring extra tippet boys you're gonna need
it!". As the river continues downstream towards the takeout, the
trout start to back off and make room for hard fighting, high jumping,
bronze back small mouth bass. This trip is definitely one of a kind -
where getting down the river is just as exciting as catching what's in
it.
